Hello, thank you.

I am Matthew Bates. Somewhere along the way, many years ago, my nom de guerre became Mat Diablo. Silly, I know. I am professionally interested in the creation, discovery and consumption of music and radio content. I am personally interested in classic motorcycles, anything snow-related, family, and churros.

What happened to the 91-EX Morning Show?

hey- it's Mat.

We are going to post something for you on Monday, but right now we are doing what any Three Best Friends would do after finding out they've been fired. Having some beers and trying to figure things out. Mostly having beers.

We are reading all of your emails, facebook posts, tweets, message board posts, plus all of the stuff that they aren't censoring on the 91X page.... and we are humbled. Alternately laughing and crying. We set out in 2008 to create a different kind of radio show, and a community that transcended the 4 1/2 hours a day that we talk nonsense on the radio, and it looks like it worked. For that, we are beyond grateful and touched.

What now? Well, in the short term I am going to take my daughter to the zoo today. Carlos and Sammi are holed up at Carlos' apartment watching Super Troopers and Tivoed episodes of Tim and Eric and laughing maniacally until they are in tears. We are all going to meet up at Karl Strauss' Beach to Brewery event today with the Surfrider Foundation, and we would love to see you there.

Give us a day or so to mellow out, sober up, and regroup with our families. After that, we will post an "official statement" of sorts.

For now, we are going to use this page as a means to communicate with you. 91ExMorningshow.com will be up soon to provide you with the content that you may be missing from your daily routine.

In the meantime, here's whhhaaaaaatttsss on the internet!

The interweb can't be censored. Here's what people are saying about us on twitter:

The community seems to be having fun on our facebook page. Join, please:

Some kind soul set up a "team coco" type facebook page here:

Team 91-EX

Fellow radio nerds are discussing here:

And of course, on twitter: @91ExMorningshow

You can reach us all individually here:

and Samantha.Skolmoski@Gmail.com

The amount of emails and VM's we have been receiving is really astonishing. Give us a sec to hit you back. We most assuredly will.

If you are still interested come Monday, we will have a new message up for you here. That includes info about one last big party featuring (of course) the finest Craft Beer that our fair city has to offer.

Love you, for reals.

I can honestly say that the only reason that I ever tuned into 91X was for you, Carlos and Sammi. Without your show, 91X is just another shitty radio station playing douchey cockrock and songs that were once cool in '95 and have since just become tired staples of mainstream "alternative" radio.

I hope that you all find a way to keep the content coming. I'm behind you 100%.

I've been a listener of 91X for over 20 years, I've seen many shows come and go... and never cared. Your show on the other hand became a necessary part of my mornings. I am incredibly sad and taken aback by what happened and without warning. I don't know what I'll do with my morning commutes anymore and hope you guys will be back on the air soon.

Thank you guys for filling my morning with laughter, fun and music.

I'm going to be blunt. I feel terrible for you three. I've been there myself, as you well know. But I must admit that the only reason I continually tuned into the show for the 35 minute drive in the morning, was the simple fact that I knew you. I wasn't crazy about some of the weekly/daily features, but that's me.

Best of luck. Beers. Soon.

Oh, and Barrel Roll DONE.

I'm pretty mad and upset about this, I can't imagine how you guys feel. You guys are the only reason I enjoyed my job, I'd sit at my desk with my earbuds in and loud so I couldn't hear anyones crap at work. Those 4 1/2 hrs of the day were the only good thing that came out of having an office job. I hope that somehow someway yu guys get back on air, I don't care what station, I will follow. I don't wanna see Sammi on the streets or in OB. I know she might like the OB Bum lifestyle though. See you guys soon.

Dear friends, today I was shocked to hear what had happened..
I can only wish you all the best. Most of us really only listened to station because of the morning show. But somehow I knew this would happen, first Mahoney then Preston it really doesn't surprise me.

To all of you I wish you the best.

Echoing everyone else's sentiments, the 91x morning show was the only reason to listen to commercial radio. I will now be changing between KPBS and the jazz station in the mornings.

Thank you guys for supporting craft brews, local music and creating a show that transcended the typical radio experience. Thank you for being accessible and being stalwart members of the community. While it seems like it was an uphill battle from the start, what with Mahoney leaving, I have little doubt you'll find success moving forward.

It was cathartic to change my #1 button to something other than 91.1 today.

I said so on Twitter, but I just wanted to reiterate over here as well, but you guys are what made my morning commute enjoyable. And I'm really sorry to hear this happened. You three are great and I hope you bounce back and quickly. I'll miss your show every morning.

Hey guys, sorry to hear that you Guys got fired. My best wishes to you lot. Anyway, I knew this was coming since the "play more music" shit they made you do, and I actually kinda hate the 91x selection now, so I stopped listening, but still I'd dropped by in between days to try to catch up.

I still remember when cantore and that old English fart got fired, too, and I was really butt hurt because of it. Then I learned to love you guys. I hope you could all kinda fund a really independant (not like the shitty slogan we hear every 3 minutes) radio station. Or at least an Internet one.

Also, I went to check inmediately the 91xmorningshow page and it was a black empty space. That was really low. Now all that is gone.

Anyways, keep your chin up, remember that you all guys have some kind of talent, and you gotta work those moneymakers! So get up, destupify, and do a barrell roll!

Btw, I still owe mat 5 bucks for playing days of the Phoenix on air.

So I hope we can still hear from you and the crew, taco hands and as well sammy.

So best wishes in your new path.

Defenetly going to miss all the good things of the best morning show like no other in history of 91x.

hey mat- dude what the hell thats so messed up. i saw the 91-EX facebook page and i thought it was a sick joke until i went to the website and theres no more links. was it sudden for you guys cuz before you were all over the station and the webpage and now this shit? 91x just lost a huge fan base. but anyways you guys should def like start your own station or at least broadcast online. imma miss all the funny crap coming out of my speakers every morning. oh and my friend showed me this vid when i told her. thought you might like it. its the trailer for the boat that rocked. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnQc3lO4JDs

OMG Mat, I am so bummed, its like I just woke up and found out my best buds moved away with out saying a word, I feel so sad for you guys! You made my morning commutes to the hellhole also known as Escondido so much less painful. The station has NO idea what they just did...
I will follow you guys wherever you go, I lookforward to the website...
Much Love...

I've officially switched to NPR in the mornings. Enough said.

You made San Diego radio worth listening to, my man. You & the crew will be sorely missed.

May 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDJ-E

Gonna miss you guys in the morning and all the cool funny as hell segments that you guys had. The one thing you guys did differently IMO was you really allowed the listeners to be apart of the show more so than any other radio program I've listened to and that was really cool and hilarious at times. I know you guys and gal will go on to do bigger and better things while still having fun. So know I'll leave you guys three wooos for each on of u guys. Woooooooooooooo...woooooooooooooo..woooooooooooooo. Love ya guys and gl.

O yea Holla back marijuana. :)

I just read about the end of Mat's show. I'm hoping Mat reads these posts, as I could not find another way to contact you more privately. I know that sometimes a show ends because the performer wants it that way, but this doesn't seem to be the case. If I'm mistaken, my apology, but otherwise, I wanted to extend my greetings to you. We worked for a couple years in the same building, with a Great Wall of China separating us. I don't know if they (management) gave you enough time to set some traction, but I saw you around town, and your friends and fans have commented quite nicely about you. That's good comfort at a time like this.

I wish you the very best of luck in your next endeavor.

Wow. Please take note of the comment above this one, yall... Dave Rickards from the motha effin DSC.

If any of this ordeal has made you (as a member of the 91EX morning show community) feel like radio is generally full of untrustworthy characters and used car salesmen... Look at Dave.

That guy is a class act in more ways than many of you may ever know. Straight up, if it weren't for the DSC, our show would have never been able to exist the way it did.

The DSC is the gold standard of radio in this city, and always will be. Their legacy reaches farther than ours ever will, and they did it by just being good folks and treating the people around them with respect. Imagine that.

My only regret about being fired is that we somehow outlived the DSC, and I wont have anything good to listen to on my new morning commute.

Thanks, Dave. Sorry for the public display of affection, but we all Love Your Show.
